A common insurance question is “how is my car protected if it’s in the shop?” If you carry physical damage coverage (often referred to as comprehensive and collision) your vehicle is still covered under your policy when it’s in the care, custody or control of the auto repair or body shop.
Here are a few more frequently asked questions we get from our clients:
Should my insurance have to pay for something the auto repair or body shop damaged?
Auto repair and body shops should carry what we call Garage Keepers coverage. That means the business owner buys insurance to cover vehicles they do not own but are left in their care for service or repair. When written properly, the shop’s insurance would pay for any damage and cover costs of repair so your own insurance would not get involved.
I’m driving a loaner car from the shop, and I get in an accident which insurance will coverage any damages?
In most cases your personal auto policy will cover the loaner as a “temporary substitute” so you would get the same coverage on the loaner as the car you have in the shop. Same coverage…different vehicle.
